How to Pack Like a Pro

Packing your bags, whether it be for a weekend away or a year-long journey around the world, can be one of the most exciting or most terrifying parts of the whole travel experience. Having had to pack my whole life into 2 checked bags and 2 carry-ons, I consider myself somewhat of a packing pro. Here are a few tips that will make the whole process less stressful.

1. Make a list!

This one is super important (and my favorite, because I love making lists.) Putting everything down on paper is good for multiple reasons. It helps in the planning process to make sure you aren't forgetting anything important and also to make sure you don't over pack.

2. Plan your outfits.

This will help make sure you don't bring clothes that you don't actually need. You should also plan outfits that use versatile pieces, mainly pieces that can also be used in other outfits.

3. Pack for 2 weeks.

This is a tip for packing for a long-term trip. If you are going on a trip 2 weeks or longer don't pack more clothes, just take the ones you have to a laundromat.

4. Check the weather before you go.

This seems like a no brainer but, still important. Check the forecast and see if you will actually be needing that warm coat or not.

5. Buy when you get there.

Some things I don't even bother packing and just buy when I arrive. This includes things like toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, even deodorant if you are not picky. If you look in the right place you can find them pretty cheap and you save space and avoid an accidental liquid explosion.

6. Ziplock Bags!

Gallon zip lock bags are by far my favorite thing to use for packing. I pack everything in them. Clothes, shoes, jewelry, you name it. They are especially great if you are moving around a lot while traveling because they keep your bag very organized. They also help save space, they are almost like vacuum seal bags if you take all the air out of them.

Packing Tips

7. Pack only things you wear.

I know this seems obvious. But, don't go out and buy new clothes for your trip, especially if you don't wear them ahead of time. They will just be a waste of space when you end up not using them.

8. Pack everything, then take out half.

To make sure you don't overpack. Pack your bag with everything you plan on taking and then take out half of it, because you definitely will not use all of it, even if you think you will.

9. Sunglass cases are great for electrical cords.

Electrical cords can be a real pain in the you know what. A great way to keep them organized is to roll them up and put them in a spare sunglasses case.

Packing Tips

10. Take a smaller bag.

If you are having trouble not over packing then take a smaller bag. It will force you to make the hard decisions on what is important and what isn't.

Hope these tips and tricks make packing for your next trip a little less stressful.

I know packing can be so hard sometimes, you need to have options, right? I'm glad I could help with the cords, let me know how it goes.
